Why The Lutheran Zephyr 2.0?

After hearing one too many of my opinions, my wife said, "You need a blog." Thus on May 22, 2005, The Lutheran Zephyr was born.

The name of this blog comes from a famed Martin Luther quote in which he suggests that one way to banish the Devil is to break wind. "I resist the Devil, and often it is with a fart that I chase him away."* Hence my Lutheran Zephyr (zephyr is a light wind) is a light Lutheran wind; or, a way to banish the devil.

My goal on this blog is simple: to offer semi-intelligent, heart-felt reflections parish ministry and Christian faith, as it happens. I use this medium for personal reflection and as a way to contribute to Christian conversation on various issues. I'm not ashamed to blurt out an idea and later get shot down by others who find the fallacy or heresy in my arguments.  In that way this blog is designed not only to help me express my ideas, but to refine them and learn from others whose insight is keener and intellect crisper.  (The fine print disclaimer explains the limitations of the blog.  The Who is Chris? page describes some of my perspectives and background.)

What's with the 2.0?

Shortly after my ordination in December 2008, I suspended blogging to focus on the beginning of my pastoral ministry.  As I return to blogging just three months later, the Version 2.0 of The Lutheran Zephyr will be a more focused endeavor - addressing issues related to pastoral ministry, theology, Bible, vocation, etc..  Rants and reflections about politics or baseball are no longer part of my blogging.  Past posts about politics that seemed to me to be unnecessarily distracting from my faith-based blogging have been deleted.  I stand by what I've written in the past - and in fact, I'm sure those political posts are floating around the blogosphere somewhere - but I've removed those old posts in an effort to give clearer focus to the blog.

Through this blog I have "met" many wonderful people whose thoughts, comments and reflections have often inspired me, kept me up late at times, annoyed the hell out of me, and made me laugh out loud.  Thank you.

This blog began for free at lutheranzephyr.blogspot.com. In April 2006 I began paying for the privilege to blog (and for a few more features) when I migrated over to www.lutheranzephyr.com, hosted by Typepad. I lost all the comments from my original blogspot site in the transition, but otherwise it has been a good move.
